The Art of Public Speaking Unlocked

Public speaking is something many people fear. Standing in front of an audience, all eyes on you, with the pressure to deliver something insightful, compelling, and maybe even inspirational—it’s enough to make your palms sweat just thinking about it. For years, I was one of those people. Despite my confidence in one-on-one conversations, the idea of speaking to a crowd made me incredibly nervous. Today, however, public speaking is not only something I do frequently but something I genuinely enjoy.

In this post, I want to share the journey that helped me overcome my fear of public speaking and, more importantly, how I found my own voice in the process. I hope my experience can offer some practical tips for those who are struggling with stage fright or simply want to become more effective communicators.

Learn To Find Your Voice The Easy Way - Callum Russell

Finding My Voice

The journey to find my voice was long and difficult. During my high school years and into my first years at university, I was a nervous and shy individual. Often staying quiet in group discussions, not putting myself out there for fear of looking silly or embarrassing myself.

When I reflect on that time, I attributed my shyness to a lack of confidence; whether it was a beliefe in myself that I was good enough, or a beliefe that I knew what I was talking about; either way a lack of confience was a key reason why I couldn’t find my voice!

In order to find and use my voice I had to take a journey of self-discovery, one of which has changed my life forever. In this article I would like to share my key takeaways and advice from this transformative experience to show you that anyone can find their voice!

Acknowledge Your Fears For Public Speaking Tips - Callum Russell

Acknowledge The Fear

The first time I was asked to give a public talk, I was terrified, to the point where I had to visit my GP to ask for medication to calm me down. Looking back at this, I realise just how bad my anxiety really was. The fear was real, and for a long time, I avoided opportunities to speak publicly like the plague.

My heart raced, my mind went blank, and I couldn’t shake the overwhelming thought of embarrassing myself in front of everyone.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned: fear is normal. It’s part of the process, especially when you’re pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. The key isn’t to eliminate fear altogether—that’s unrealistic. The key is to accept that it’s there and learn to work with it. For me, the turning point came when I stopped trying to fight the fear and instead acknowledged it. I realised that being nervous meant I cared about the message I wanted to share, and that was a good thing.

Once I stopped trying to make the fear disappear and instead focused on managing it, I was able to move forward. If you’re facing stage fright, start by acknowledging the fear, but don’t let it stop you from moving forward.

How to commit to learning new skills everyday

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare...

There’s no shortcut around this one—preparation is everything. In the early stages of my public speaking journey, I learned the hard way that winging it was not an option. The more prepared I was, the more confident I felt. Over time, I developed a routine to prepare for every speaking engagement: I research my audience, structure my key points clearly, and rehearse multiple times.

Rehearsal is critical because it allows you to internalise your message. It’s not just about memorising a script—it’s about knowing your material well enough to talk about it naturally, even if things go off track. When I’m well-prepared, I don’t have to worry about forgetting what to say or losing my place. That sense of preparedness allows me to focus on delivering my message rather than battling nerves.

Public Speaking Tips Shift Your Focus - Callum Russell

Shift The Focus Away From You

One of the biggest reasons we fear public speaking is because we’re so focused on ourselves—how we sound, how we look, and whether we’re impressing the audience. I was guilty of this for a long time. But once I realized that public speaking wasn’t about me, but rather about the message I was sharing, everything changed.

The best way to overcome stage fright is to focus on your audience and the value you’re bringing to them. What problem are you helping them solve? What insight are you offering? How can your message make their lives better or inspire them? When you shift the focus from yourself to your audience, it takes a lot of the pressure off. Suddenly, you’re not performing—you’re having a conversation, sharing something valuable, and connecting with the people in the room.

Become An Authentic Public Speaker With Confidence - Callum Russell

Be Authentic Not Perfect

One of the misconceptions I had early on was that in order to be a great public speaker, I had to be perfect—flawless delivery, no stumbles, no moments of hesitation. But the truth is, authenticity is far more powerful than perfection.

I remember one particular speaking engagement where I stumbled over my words and even forgot a key point I had planned to make. At first, I panicked. But instead of freezing, I acknowledged the moment with humor, took a deep breath, and continued. Surprisingly, the audience responded more warmly after that slip-up. I realised they appreciated seeing me as a real person, not a polished, robotic presenter.

Audiences connect with authenticity. They don’t expect perfection—they expect sincerity. The more I allowed myself to be natural, to speak as myself rather than trying to emulate someone else, the better my talks became.
